"Afghanistan and the International Community - a Partnership for the Future"
Federal Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer and Foreign Minister Abdullah of Afghanistan jointly hosted an international conference under the title "Afghanistan and the International Community - a Partnership for the Future". The conference will be held at foreign minister level on 31 March and 1 April 2004 at the Hotel Intercontinental in Berlin.

PRESIDENT KARZAI: Ladies and gentlemen, greetings. It’s such a tremendous pleasure and honor to have my good friend and a real fine statesman, Secretary Powell, again together in maybe – how many days – 15 days time? Two weeks time? The last time was in Kabul; today we are in Berlin. I heard Secretary Powell had a very wonderful speech earlier: full of support for Afghanistan, full of commitment of the United States for Afghanistan. And the U.S. has announced an additional $1 billion dollars on top of the $1.2 billion dollars that was announced for Afghanistan earlier. This makes the United States the biggest donor to Afghanistan: in terms of peace building and in terms of reconstruction and in terms of the overall (inaudible) process in the country. Full text

Global Community to Reaffirm Long-Term Commitment to Afghanistan
Sixty-five delegations to attend Berlin conference March 31-April 1

Washington -- The coming donors conference for Afghanistan should help reassure Afghans of the international community's long-term commitment to their future, says Ambassador William Taylor, U.S. State Department coordinator for Afghanistan. The meeting, scheduled for March 31-April 1 in Berlin, "is a real opportunity for the international community to get together and reaffirm its commitment to the future of Afghanistan, the successful development of Afghanistan's economy, its political future and improvements in security," Taylor told reporters in Washington March 26. State Department Official Previews Afghanistan Donors Conference

Representatives of about 65 governments and international organizations will gather in Berlin March 31-April 1 for a donors conference on Afghanistan that will review foreign aid efforts to date and evaluate the country's future needs. Full text

Secretary Powell to Attend International Conference on Afghanistan in Berlin
March 3, 2004

Secretary of State Colin Powell will travel to Berlin and Brussels March 30-April 2. In Berlin he will attend the International Conference on Afghanistan, and in Brussels he will participate in an April 2 event marking the formal accession of the seven newest NATO allies, as well as a meeting of NATO foreign ministers to discuss the June summit in Istanbul.
